Important reception
Kine Per week said “Brand new sturdy ‘crooks slide out’ was peopled with a colorful assortment away from important and you can arresting emails, and they, skilfully controlled by the blogger and you can movie director, allow the motion picture in order to tread water efficiently. It is merely for the become which begins to fall apart, nevertheless the slap-upwards finale rescues they regarding the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you may smartly dialogued, it will have no high difficulty during the living down their incredibly unsightly name.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The film movements at the a simple rate, this new talk was smooth and you may characterisations generally effective. Knob Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes head the new shed professionally, because investigator was used significant aplomb because of the that person identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody from the Brand new Yorker indexed “Which terse and you can tight film noir try based on this new romantic and you will elite disputes of your title reputation, the fresh new violent genius (played by the Penis Powell) trailing a chic unlawful gambling enterprise. The brand new film’s creator and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess game, to own mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) did on local casino and you may old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely controlled body language from like and possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and stylishly cocky photo (and their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a low profile classic of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Photograph provides activity and you will suspense, and you will particular small suits of laughs to add preferences. Adept shows because of the Penis Powell, due to the fact a gaming domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, just like the an authorities inspector, together with within the rating . Whilst the patch uses a familiar trend, the characterizations is actually new together with activities adequate to overbalance. Dialog was terse and relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney contact. Uncommon cam bases appear now and then so you’re able to intensify interest and you may temporarily arrest the attention. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand spanking new author and user manufacturer, in addition to supports making this a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a point of viewing Mr. Powell undergo their paces smartly if you are a huge cast of stars and you will stars render your customary assistance. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable nothing lady whom brings forth the latest best in him and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen who becomes him on the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily just like the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do another ready journey because the a weary cops inspector exactly who in the long run closes the case. A great amount of sipping and you will puffing is performed because of the the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
