Kine Weekly told you “The brand new powerful ‘crooks slip out’ is actually peopled having a colourful assortment away from important and you can arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated because of the journalist and you will director, allow the movie so you’re able to tread drinking water effectively. It is simply for the end up so it starts to break apart, but the slap-right up finale rescues they throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and intelligently dialogued, it has zero high challenge in life down the incredibly unattractive name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The movie moves within a simple rate, the talk try slick and you will characterisations essentially productive. Cock Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead the fresh shed skillfully, because investigator try used big aplomb from the that person identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody about The Yorker listed “It terse and you will tight flick noir are based on brand new intimate and elite conflicts of the term profile, the criminal mastermind (starred from the Knob Powell) at the rear of an elegant illegal local casino. This new film’s publisher and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, getting mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling enterprise and you can dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic software, the new cast’s suavely regulated body language from like and you will hazard, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and stylishly assertive photos (plus their political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a hidden classic of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Photograph features motion and you may suspense, and you may particular short satisfies out of humor to add preferences. Expert activities of the Cock Powell, given that a playing home overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as a police inspector, as well as up the rating . As the patch comes after a familiar trend, this new characterizations are new plus the performances suitable so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you will relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney reach. Strange digital camera angles come-along on occasion to help you intensify interest and you may momentarily stop the interest. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing since the director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, unique copywriter and associate music producer, and supports rendering it a smooth development.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a point of seeing Mr. Powell undergo his paces fashionably if you find yourself a big cast out-of actors and you may performers bring him vintage service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice nothing woman whom brings forth the newest best in him and you will Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen which gets your with the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily because villain and Lee J. Cobb does an alternate in a position tour since an exhausted cops inspector which finally closes the actual situation. Significant amounts of consuming and you will puffing is performed by all worried.” [ 12 ]
